Is This a Kissing Book?: Writing Sex

Sex can be a touchy subject (get it?) but it is of course necessary in order for humans to keep making more humans. However, many writers who include it in their work receive significant backlash from the public. What makes a sex scene effective? Why is it important to de-stigmatize sex in stories? How far is too far, and where should we draw the line?
